What to test

Try these on any device you have, with real deadlines if you can. If you have two devices, do a few on each. Tap a mission to see what to do. If something doesn't match "What should happen", please tell us. Step-by-step help for each is on the Help & how-to page.

  1. 1. Add a return

In the Add deadline panel (in the app, tap Add), choose Return and enter something you bought recently: the store, the price, the purchase date and how many days you have to return it.

What should happen: A preview shows the last day to return it, and reminders are set for 7 days before, 3 days before and the day itself.

  2. 2. Add a subscription or free trial

Add a subscription you pay for, such as a streaming service, with its next renewal date. Or add a free trial with its start and end dates.

What should happen: A subscription adds to Monthly Burn. A trial shows the price you'll pay after it ends, and appears in Money at Risk when it ends within 7 days.

  3. 3. Scan a receipt

Use Scan & Add (in the app, Scan Receipt / Screenshot) with a paper receipt laid flat in good light, or a screenshot of an order email.

What should happen: A review screen fills in what it could read: the store, date, amount and items. Nothing is saved until you tap Save Deadline, and you can fix anything first. If it read something wrong, tell us what.

  4. 4. Speak or Type

Choose Speak or Type, tap the microphone and say one sentence, such as "Hulu free trial, one week, starting today". You can type it instead.

What should happen: Your words appear under What I heard as you speak, and you can edit them. After Continue, the review shows the right type, date and amount.

  5. 5. Get a reminder

Add a deadline that is 1 or 2 days away, with Email reminders on (and Push on a phone: allow notifications when it asks).

What should happen: The reminder arrives once, usually between 8 and 10 AM your time on the reminder day. Tapping a phone notification opens that deadline. If it doesn't arrive, check your spam folder, then tell us.

  6. 6. Take action, then undo

On one of your deadlines, tap Mark Returned (or Cancel Trial, Cancel Subscription or Mark Claimed), then tap Undo.

What should happen: The deadline leaves your active list, a message shows how much you kept, and Estimated Savings goes up. Undo puts everything back as it was, savings included.

  7. 7. Delete it and bring it back

Delete a test deadline, then open History and restore it.

What should happen: It comes back with its details and reminders.

  8. 8. Switch devices

Sign in on a second device, for example your phone and the website.

What should happen: The same deadlines show on both, and a change on one shows on the other after a refresh.

  9. 9. Look around Settings

Try dark mode, the reminder settings and Export My Data. On the website, try Reports.

What should happen: Your settings stay the same after you close and reopen the app, and the export downloads your deadlines.

  10. 10. Forward an email

Find your private address in Settings → Forward receipts and tap Copy. From any inbox (it doesn't have to be the one you sign in with), forward an order, free-trial, renewal or bill email to it.

What should happen: Within about a minute it shows under To review. Tap Review to check what it found, then Save Deadline or Dismiss. Nothing is saved until you choose.

  11. 11. Run the subscription check-up

Choose Subscription check-up (in the app, under Add). Pick the services you pay for, check each price and how often you pay, and add the next renewal date. For one of them, tap Not sure of the date.

What should happen: The last step shows about how much you pay a month and a year. After Save all, the ones with a date are saved, and the one you weren't sure of is saved as a draft.

  12. 12. Use a store's return window

Add a return and type a big store in the store box, for example Target.

What should happen: A button such as Use Target's usual 90 days appears, and the days fill in only when you tap it. Stores you've used before are suggested first.

  13. 13. Track a regular bill

Add one bill you pay every month, such as your phone, car insurance or electric bill. In the Add deadline panel (in the app, tap Add), choose Subscription and enter the company, the amount, how often you pay and the next due date.

What should happen: It adds to Monthly Burn, and you get reminders before each due date. Tell us whether you'd like bills such as your mortgage, car payment and utilities to have their own place in the app.

  14. 14. Keep a bill you pay on purpose

Find a subscription you mean to keep paying, such as your internet or phone bill, and tap Keep it on its card, or open it and tap Keep it. Then look at the All list.

What should happen: It moves to Subscriptions you're keeping at the bottom of the list, folded with its monthly total. It still counts in Monthly Burn but no longer in Money at Risk, and you'll get one reminder the day before each charge. Remind me as usual puts it back.

  15. 15. Optional: delete a spare account

Create a second, throwaway account with another email address, delete it in Settings → Delete Account, then use the Restore link in the email we send.

What should happen: The account is locked right away, and restoring it brings everything back.
